Impact equity is also cool because it could provide a right tail upside for founders of impactful nonprofit orgs. If the founders keep a normal amount of impact equity, they could someday come to control many millions of charitable dollars.

What the retroactive funding ecosystem most needs is for Anthropic and OpenAI employees to pledge in advance that when they get liquidity, they will be using it to buy impact certs.

There’s a chicken and egg problem, where not enough funders are preregistering for impact certificates because there’s not enough expectation that someone will be there to pay for them later, and at the same time, there aren’t enough impact certificates around yet for it to be the best way for large donors to fund what they care about.

Impact equity is a cool idea, but it doesn’t really solve the basic problem the way a concrete promise of a billion dollars of cert spend in two years from a credible donor would.

Here’s another proposal I’ve been thinking about: a website where anyone can show proof that they did a thing, an AI does a lot of work to investigate whether they actually did the thing and their proof holds up (fraud can be avoided by requiring submissions to stake some money that the AI will not determine that it’s fraud), and then donors, (or AI grantmakers following mandates written by donors), give to the things they want to see more of in the world.

The mandates could be public, and include prizes (where a specific thing is wanted), or promises of retroactive funding for things that fit into the mandate.
